Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Any run of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as one word, which matches how most word processors count. Hyphenated words count as one.
What counts as a sentence?
Text ending in a period, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis. Abbreviations like "e.g." can add an extra sentence, so treat the figure as an estimate.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time assumes about 220 words per minute, a typical adult pace for everyday text. Speaking time assumes about 140 words per minute.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser and the text is never sent to a server. Closing the page discards it.
