Tip calculator

Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people to see the tip, the total and what each person pays. Turn on rounding to make every share a whole-dollar amount.

The pre-tip total on the check, usually including tax.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the bill amount from the check.
  2. Pick a tip percentage. The total and tip update instantly.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the bill to see each share.
  4. Tick "round up" if you want each share to be a whole-dollar amount; the tip grows slightly to cover the difference.

Good to know

  • The tip percentage is applied to the bill amount you enter; tax is not added by the calculator.
  • With "round up" on, the total and tip are recalculated from the rounded per-person share, so the tip percentage ends up slightly higher.

Frequently asked questions

How is the tip calculated?

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100, and the total is the bill plus the tip. On an $85 bill at 18% the tip is 85 × 0.18 = $15.30, so the total is $100.30. Divided between two people that is $50.15 each, including $7.65 of tip per person.

What does "round up" do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar and recalculates the total and tip from that. With an $85 bill at 18% split two ways, $50.15 becomes $51.00 each, the total becomes $102.00 and the tip rises from $15.30 to $17.00. Rounding never reduces the tip.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides in the US generally say tipping on the pre-tax amount is acceptable, but many people simply tip on the total shown on the check, which is a little more generous. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill; the calculator does not add tax itself.

How much should I tip?

In the United States 15% is the usual minimum for sit-down service, 18–20% for good service, and 10% or a few dollars for counter service or delivery. Many other countries tip far less or not at all, so check local custom when travelling. The default here is 18%.

Can I split the bill unevenly?

No, the calculator divides the total equally. If one person ordered much more, run it once for the shared items and once for the extra, or use the percentage calculator to work out individual shares, then add the same tip percentage to each of them.
