Frequently asked questions
How do you convert time between time zones?
Convert the local time to UTC by subtracting the source zone's UTC offset, then add the offset of the target zone. For 9:00 in New York (UTC-4 in summer) the UTC time is 13:00, and London (UTC+1 in summer) is then 14:00. The calculator does this with the real time zone rules for the date you pick.
Does the converter handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Each zone uses its own rules for the date you choose, so the difference between New York and London is 5 hours for most of the year but 4 hours in the few weeks when the US has changed its clocks and the UK has not. Phoenix, India, Japan, Korea and many other places do not change clocks at all.
What happens at the moment clocks change?
When clocks spring forward, one local hour never happens, for example 2:30 AM on the second Sunday of March in New York, and the converter asks you to pick another time. When clocks fall back, a local time happens twice, and the converter uses the first occurrence, before the clocks were turned back.
Why is the date different in the converted time?
Zones span more than 24 hours between the earliest and the latest, so the same moment can fall on different calendar days. 9:00 in Seoul on October 6 is 8:00 PM on October 5 in New York. The result always shows the full date next to the time so you do not miss a day change.
Is my time or date sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with the time zone data built into it, so nothing you type leaves your device. Results for a given date can differ slightly from older devices if their time zone data is out of date, because governments sometimes change their rules.
